Tenzing – Hillary’s Everest Marathon (IH), also known as the Everest Marathon, was launched in honor of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary – the first people to reach the top of the world on top of the mountain. Everest (8848 m) May 29, 1953.

The idea of a marathon at the foot of Everest is an original idea of Ian Turner, who invented it in 1985 during an expedition to Everest base camp. The Everest Marathon may have had a humble beginning, but today it is recognized worldwide, and trail runners enthusiasts from all over the world are flocking to Nepal to take part in the event.

The Himalayan country hosts the Everest Marathon every year on May 29, which has been successfully held since 2003. Every year hundreds of participants from more than 20 different countries come to the marathon.

ICH is also the highest marathon in the world, which lifts runners to a height of up to 5,300 meters above sea level. The highest height is 5,545 meters at the top of Kala Pattar, which offers stunning 360-degree views of the majestic Himalayas – Lhotse, Nupe, Pumori, including the highest mountain in the world. Everest.

This marathon is designed for trained and experienced runners who run on treadmills and longer routes. But that doesn’t mean you still can’t witness this spectacular event and cheer on the runners.

AT THE START

To get to the starting point of the Everest marathon, participants must first reach Everest base camp, which means that you also have the opportunity to hike in Nepal – a 14-day hike, to be exact.

The hike passes through Sagarmatha National Park with its unique landscape and wildlife. Beware of some! That’s what I call killing two birds with one stone.

Therefore, the participants of the marathon must be in Nepal three weeks before the start of the race to perform all the formalities, prepare for the rugged terrain of this Himalayan country and, of course, reach the starting point!

Runners can choose to camp or stay in cabins while going to Everest base camp, or they can mix it up as in base camp as there are no cabins.

During the campaign, runners visit monasteries such as The Pangboche Monastery, a 17th-century gomp, as well as the oldest in Khumbu, as well as Tengboche Monastery, the largest hompa in the region. Exploring these unique places, which are a reflection of Tibetan Buddhism, with their architecture and breathtaking exhibits, complements the overall impression of an already great adventure.

Before and/or after the hike to Everest Base Camp, participants also have the opportunity to experience Nepalese culture, traditions, architecture, art and crafts. The Everest Marathon will include a tour of the valley’s World Heritage sites in mystical places such as the Pashipatinath Temple, Swayambhunath and Budhanath, as well as Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Kathmandu Durbar Square, all within the compact capital. Race at Everest Base Camp

Not that the view of the Kathmandu Valley from the flight was not amazing, but the view from the flight to Lukla and the great Himalayas will certainly be just as spectacular, if not more.

For the faint-hearted, landing at Tenzing Hillary Airport, also known as Lukla Airport, will be as much an adventure as the Everest camp itself. This part of the trip will instantly charge you with adrenaline.

The marathon starts from Everest base camp and ends at Namcha Bazar at a distance of 42 km. For most of the marathon the trail goes down, but there are also several climbs, especially two steep ones. The Marathon Trail is the walking trail itself.

The Everest Marathon takes place at such a height that special attention should be paid to the health of the participants. To this end, water supply points, recreational areas and medical checkpoints were built at different marathon distances.

There is even an emergency evacuation point for those who cannot run a marathon due to health problems or injuries. Much attention is also paid to the safety of the races, and several marshals will be on hand with marathon guides to help runners if necessary.

In addition, all runners are equipped with electronic bracelets to follow them on the track. Before the start of the marathon, all participants are checked by professional medical teams to see if they are eligible to race after the draw. Ice and snow on the trail add complexity, in addition to the obvious high altitude.

In addition to expeditions aimed at climbing the highest mountain in the world, other trekking groups are not allowed to stay overnight at Everest base camp. Thus, an overnight stay at the foot of the Kumbu icefall is just one of the unique things that Everest marathon runners can enjoy.

At the Tenzing – Hillary Everest Marathon, there are some pretty amazing world records, one of which is the highest marathon in the Guinness Book of Records. The other is played by Deepak Rai, a Nepalese runner in 2006 AD, in the shortest time – 3 hours 28 minutes and 27 seconds. And for a foreign rider the speed record is 4 hours 50 minutes 10 seconds Frenchman Antoine Bonfils. Similarly, Timothy Watson set the record for the shortest time among his fellow Britons – 5 hours 45 minutes in 2014.

To take part in the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon, runners must register here for an extraordinary event.

In addition to the Tensing-Hillary Everest marathon, there is another event known as the Everest Ultramarathon, which kicked off in 2010. Everest’s ultramarathon consists of a 65 km run, starting with Gorak Shep and ending in Lukla.

It’s definitely for hardcore runners!
